Not-So-Weird Science
Sometimes everything you need to conduct a scientific experiment is on the shelf of your local c-store.
Turns out you don’t need a white coat, a lab or a supplier of scientific equipment to conduct your own scientific experiments.
You just need a convenience store or a gas station.
Now when we say scientific experiments, we don’t mean anything on the level of discovering electricity, inventing moving pictures, or in the case of Dr. Jekyll (written by onetime Monterey Peninsula resident Robert Louis Stevenson), separating out the worst part of your personality from yourself.
But science certainly doesn’t have to be dangerous, and can actually be fun for all ages. Experiments don’t have to use expensive materials, either. Here are some examples of simple science with c-store ingredients.
Make your own Lava Lamp. All you need is vegetable oil, water, a few drops of food coloring and an Alka-Seltzer tablet.
Create a homemade rocket. You can make your own rocket with a plastic water bottle, white vinegar, a funnel, and baking soda.
Make an ice cream sundae. Combine half-and-half, sugar, cream, vanilla, and salt in a resealable bag. Seal the bag and shake until it’s a creamy consistency. Freeze it. Grab some chocolate syrup and enjoy.
Conduct a cobweb experiment. Fill a glass with some chocolate syrup and then cut a straw in half and drop it into the glass. Blow through the straw and watch how the syrup swirls around, forming a cobweb-like pattern.
Use Mentos and soda to make a geyser. All you need is a bottle of diet soda and a few Mentos candies. Drop the candy into the soda and watch the geyser erupt.
Speaking of science, you could say that SSCS takes a scientific approach to providing the best software experience a convenience store can have. We’re not just talking about the engineering behind the code, which is great, but also about our approach to sales and support, which involves understanding industry needs, researching tech strategies we can apply for the benefit of the c-store, and helping plan with customers the practical processes that software can improve for them. This approach is enhanced by our unparalleled experience and personal connection to our customers. Sound worth looking into?
